As you may concern, Dead Knight has already entered the first phase according to the roadmap of the project. Beside the benefits of the game that people usually pay attention to when they intend to invest in the project, there are more I would like to share. One of such things is the development process of the Dead Knight game, whose Closed Beta version will be initialized in the first quarter of 2022. And today, I will talk about the inspiration of 8-bit style on Dead Knight, or why we chose the pixel art style for this game.

Having been a gamer since my childhood, I had tons of time immersed in the world of excellent video games in the 80s — 90s. I believe that most of us already had memorable moments in exploring the world in Legend of Zelda, chilled to bone when facing the last boss in Castlevania, or getting raged when losing all the lives in Contra and still unable to finish the game (already breaking one of my controllers, even when I used Konami cheat.) Such games from the Golden Age of 8-bit era, even without the best graphic compared to video games today, are so good that people still play them, enjoy every moment from each game or even cry for it.

During the period when game console was not a powerhouse as it is right now, the developer had to focus more on the quality of the game, from plot, character development to core mechanism and I think they are why people still love the games. So, pixel-art retro style is not only nostalgic. It is the culture, the life style that we once lived in and still choose it if being given another chance to do so, like we did with pop or dance music from years before.

Another reason why 8-bit style was chosen for Dead Knight is that it is equivalent to a symbol of technology. It is undeniable that thanks to the development of computer hardware, AAA games with hyper-realistic graphic dominate the market. However, such graphic also creates a sense of usual art styles which we can find anywhere, in photographs or watercolor pictures that we find every day. More than that, pixel art might be best thought of as video game’s characteristic style — one that was created throughout the history of technology revolution. Indeed, the chunky 2D graphical style should be considered as some kinds of digital cartooning symbol, since every 8-bit game nowadays is difference. They can run more smoothly, effectively with no bound in logical and graphical processing. Believe me, games like Undertale or Hotline Miami has nothing same as 8-bit games in the past. Thus, for a new game to enter the Metaverse like Dead Knight, a symbolic art style is something really special.

Besides, the pixel art is not a dead trend. With the success that Minecraft created in 2012, thousands of new games, especially indie games have been released following the same formula. Some are good, some are boring and some are truly amazing. We can make a long list of wonderful games with such style: Shovel Knight, Dead Cells, Celeste, Undertale, etc. All show the same result: 8-bit games still have their own charm, even if its graphic might seem to be a con at first. As such, it is a never-ending trend and never be outdated. This is also a reminder of what we usually say: if something is good enough, we will never have to fix it.

Also, since 8-bit style is considered something atypical nowadays, it makes Dead Knight somewhat unique. If you take a look at the NFT game market, it is not very hard to realize that there are not many quality game projects. We can name some of them: Axie Infinity, The Sandbox, Decentraland or Crabada. Even if not following the AAA hyper-realistic graphic, all of them follow the very modern art style, which reminds us how a common game from a common studio will look like at the beginning of the 21st century. Hence, with a different manner, I hope that Dead Knight will be a phenomenon and able to catch your attention.

Generally, the charismatic manner of 8-bit style was what inspired Dead Knight to be as it is today. In the coming years, more NFT games might follow this style, which might be even more competitive for us. However, I believe that graphic style is just a component to create the success. What is more important is that Dead Knight is a good ecosystem because of its quality products. In the near future, there will be more interesting features to be released and I can’t wait to share with you about them.
